Block #9 NQC Quilt Block Challenge

NQC Quilt Block Challenge

Block #9
Sterope Star

OUR FINAL STAR!!!

This is a quilt designed by Gina Perkes
9 Blocks
1 per week
Get on Facebook and join the group!
The quilt is BEAUTIFUL!!!
GREAT JOB GINA!!!
(I DO have Gina's permission to post about the dies!)

Gina has some additional files and videos...
WELL WORTH reading and watching!

There is a NEW video
that is FANTASTIC!
It's about how to get each of these
intersections matching...
Gina shows a WONDERFUL trick!

Your dies will make this go together very smoothly!!!

OUR DIES:

Since our blocks are a finished 16" block,
Again, our dies come from the 8" GO! Qube.
I used die #1, #2, #3, #4, #5.
(Other dies available will be posted at the end of this blog.)

BUT WAIT!

There is a little something different this week!
See the little tiny star?
That does NOT fall into our 8" block...
Please pay attention to Die #5
when you get to it.

Let's start cutting our fabrics...

Fabric A:
Directions say:
Cut 2 - 5.25" squares, then subcut them
from corner to corner
so you'll have 8 triangles.
BUT,
We use DIE #4
to cut 8 - 4" fin. QST

Cut 4 - 4.5" Squares
using Die #1

FABRIC B:
Says to cut 2 - 6 7/8" squares
and subcut corner to corner
so you have triangles.
BUT,
We use Die #3
Cut 6 - 4" fin. HST

Directions say to cut
1 - 5 5/8" x 11.5" strip
But,
We use Die #3 to
cut 3 - 4" fin. HST

And directions say to cut
2 - 2 7/8" squares
and subcut once from corner to corner.
But,
We use Die #5
to cut 4 - 2" fin. HST.
(This is just the simple #5 die.)

Here is the TINY star:
 Directions say to cut
1 - 3.25" square
and subcut twice from corner to corner
in each direction.
But,
We use Die #5
to cut 4 - 2" fin. HST.
HERE'S a tricky part...
Option #1 for DIE #5:
Use Die #5 from 6" QUBE.
Option #2 for DIE #5:
Use Die #5 from 8" QUBE,
and after you make the square,
trim the square to 2.5" square,
This will make a 2" fin. square
in the block.
(There will be a little waste using Option #2.)

OPTION #1

OPTION #2

FABRIC C:

Here is the TINY star:
 Directions say to cut
2 - 3.25" square
and subcut twice from corner to corner
in each direction.
But,
We use Die #5
to cut 8 - 2" fin. HST.
HERE'S a tricky part...
Option #1 for DIE #5:
Use Die #5 from 6" QUBE.
Option #2 for DIE #5:
Use Die #5 from 8" QUBE,
and after you make the square,
trim the square to 2.5" square,
This will make a 2" fin. square
in the block.
(There will be a little waste using Option #2.)

OPTION #1

OPTION #2

FABRIC D
AND
FABRIC E:

Here is the TINY star:
 Directions say to cut
1 - 3.25" square
and subcut twice from corner to corner
in each direction.
But,
We use Die #5
to cut 4 - 2" fin. HST.
HERE'S a tricky part...
Option #1 for DIE #5:
Use Die #5 from 6" QUBE.
Option #2 for DIE #5:
Use Die #5 from 8" QUBE,
and after you make the square,
trim the square to 2.5" square,
This will make a 2" fin. square
in the block.
(There will be a little waste using Option #2.)

OPTION #1

OPTION #2

(For FABRIC E you only need 2 Triangles!)

FABRIC E:
Directions say
Cut 2 - 2.5" squares.
We use Die #2
to cut 2 - 2.5" squares

This die cuts 4, but you only need 2.

Cut 1 - 5 5/8" square
But we use
Die #3
to cut 4 - 4" fin. HST

cut 1 - 4" x 9" strip
But,
We use Die #4 to
cut 4 - 4" fin. QST

FABRIC F:

Directions say to
cut 1 - 5 5/8" square
But,
We use Die #3 to
cut 4 - 4" fin. HST

Cut 1 - 4" x 9" strip
But,
We use Die #4 to
cut 4 - 4" fin. QST

So,
Our first step in the directions is using the 4" x 9" strips.
But,
We cut 4" fin. QST.
We will be sewing those triangles together.

(Forgot to take a picture,
but this grey and white square is what
we're working on.)

Then,
The directions are using the 5 5/8" x 11.5" strip
and the 2 - 5 5/8" squares.

We already have our 4" fin. HST cut.
So you are sewing your fabric B to you fabric E & F.

Fabric B & E
Only 1 square to make.

 Fabric B & F
Make 2 squares.

All three completed.

Next in the directions we make the TINY star.
Using the Die #5
Option 1 or 2
Pay attention to the placement of your colors.
This is a simple QST
with 4 different color ways.

Here's just 1 of mine...
All 4 pieces laid out

 Sew 2 together

Sew the other 2 together

Now sew the 2 halves together

And you have your 2.5" square!
It's so little!

Make all 4 of yours.

Next,
the directions have you adding onto the E & F square we made.
So add those using the pieces we cut using our dies.

Follow the rest of the written directions
using your die cuts.

Please be careful when sewing the tiny star squares in...
Here's where I had to take a WHOLE section apart!
I was SO excited about this TINY start...
Totally got one turned around!
LOL!

And not it's been corrected...

And here is my finished block...

I'm SO happy to share these dies with you!
It took a little longer to figure this TINY star out...
But it was FUN!

Block #7 NQC Quilt Block Challenge

NQC Quilt Block Challenge

Block #7
Taygela Star

This is a quilt designed by Gina Perkes
9 Blocks
1 per week
Get on Facebook and join the group!
The quilt is BEAUTIFUL!!!
GREAT JOB GINA!!!
(I DO have Gina's permission to post about the dies!)

Gina has some additional files and videos...
WELL WORTH reading and watching!

This block is NOT as difficult as it looks!
We've done FLYING GEESE every block!
We've done HST every week!
Make those,
then put it all together!

Your dies will make this go together very smoothly!!!

OUR DIES:

Since our blocks are a finished 16" block,
Again, our dies come from the 8" GO! Qube.
I used die #1, #2, #5, #8
(Other dies available will be posted at the end of this blog.)

Let's start cutting our fabrics...

Fabric A:
12 - 2.5" Squares
These are used for 2 different things...
you will dies cut
4 - 2.5" squares
using die #2

8 - 2" fin. HST
using die #5

4 - 2.5" x 4.5" restcangles
using die #8

1 - 3.5" x 14" strip
But you will cut
8 - 2.5" HST
Using Die #5

FABRIC B:
4 - 2.5" x 4.5" Rectangles
Use die #8

8 - 2.5" Squares
These will be used as HST
so you will cut 8 - 2.5" HST
using die #5

1 - 3.5" x 7"
These will be made into 4 HST
So just cut 4 -  2" fin. HST
using die #5

FABRIC C:
1 - 4.5" Square
using die #1

FABRIC D:
1 - 3.5" x 14" strip
These will be used as HST
So cut 8 - 2" fin. HST
using die #5

4 - 2.5" Squares
Die #2

1 - 3.5" x 7" strip
This will be used as HST
So cut 4 - 2" fin. HST
using die #5

FABRIC E:
2 - 3.5" x 14" strips
These will be HST
so cut 16 - 2" fin. HST
using Die #5

FABRIC F:
8 - 2.5" Squares
These will be used as HST
so cut 8 - 2" fin. HST
using die #5

4 - 2.5" x 4.5" Rectangles
using die #8

FABRIC G:
4 - 2.5" x 4.5" Rectangles
using die #8

ON PAGE 2:
The first thing it calls for is the 3.5" x 14" strips of fabric A & E.
BUT,
Remember these are going to be HST!
So,
You've already cut those out!
Just sew them together,
right sides together,
from corner to corner.

Here they are laid out.

Right sides together

Sewn together...
I chain pieced all

And left them attached while pressing!
It just makes it easier.

Then cut them apart to make my pile.

Do the same using fabrics D & E
It calls for the same 3.5" x 14" strips,
but you've already cut your 2" fin. HST!

And again using fabrics B & D.
This one calls for the 3.5" x 7" strips.
Use you HST you've already cut!

PAGES 2 & 3:
Now we make the FLYING GEESE.
These are ALL going to call for
the 2.5" Square in the corner...
BUT...
You've already cut your HST!

You can chain piece these!

Fabrics B & G:

Lay the HST out on the 2.5" x 4.5" rectangle

Now flip the one side,
lining up the straight edge and opposite side

Sew from corner to corner

Press.

Repeat...
Lay your HST out

Flip it over
and line up the edges

Sew from corner to corner

Press.
Your Flying Geese!

repeat for Fabrics:
A & F
B & F

Now follow Gina's directions for putting the block together!
It goes together nicely!
There's a lot of pieces,
but we've done all these before!

And...
Drum roll please...
My ugly block!
I sure did get these colors wrong!!!
